Schooled on Coskel University
A fusion of two cultures come together to bring the world a burst of Caribbean flavor with a fashion twist.
WHAT IS THE MEANING OF COSKEL?
The word “coskel” is a term in Trinidadian Creole vernacular, it means literally to dress in outrageously mismatched clothing or to have outlandish or bizarre tastes in colors, décor or dress.
On the contrary Coskel University designs are just the opposite of that- they are static representations of the intangible- of culture. Coskel University represents the fusion of the fashion cosmos with the flavor of the Caribbean.
WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR COSKEL UNIVERSITY?
Our inspiration came from the need to be represented; we felt that there was a rich vibrant culture and lifestyle that most people outside the Caribbean community were not aware of. The creation of Coskel came from not only the need to make this culture mainstream but also to represent another side of Caribbean culture outside of the Bob and beaches viewpoint that most people have on the Caribbean.
HOW LONG HAS YOUR COMPANY BEEN IN EXISTENCE?
1 very long year, I think it’s a year in dog years. Within the first year we have seen our clothing line develop into a lifestyle, being carried in some of the trendiest Manhattan and Tokyo boutiques.
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN THE BUSINESS?
We used our own money to buy Tees and materials, came up with our own designs, and sold to friends--they told people who told people…the next thing we knew, we were in business in Brooklyn--Machiyo set her sights on Tokyo and went ahead promoting the line on her web blog. Soon, things took off from there in Japan, which still continues to be our biggest market to date accounting for at least 60% of profits last year. We then decided that we wanted to be more mainstream so we made the decision to carefully place our clothing on trendy people in the public eye. I met David Rudder backstage, gave him some stuff and he liked it. The next thing there were other celebs [and] stylists were sending us emails…We are still growing and so far we have a very good business plan that includes a 30% increase in revenue by year-end.
HOW DO YOU STAY AT THE TOP OF YOUR GAME?
We try to create art every time we make a piece. All pieces are original and limited editions. Once a design has been made and the run is done we never reproduce it. I think this enables us to constantly push ourselves to be creative and innovative, but it also gives our customer the sense of having the only piece of its kind. Coskel has always been about originality and individuality. Even though we want to promote a lifestyle we do not want to over saturate the market that we created.
GIVE US A DAY AND A LIFE OF A DESIGNER?
Hmmm since Machi and I do most things together it’s more grunt work than high fashion. A typical day involves filling orders for stores or customers, going to the fashion district to get materials, checking in with stores in Tokyo (there is a time difference so we need to call late in the evening), and oh yeah, sketching designs. Machi is a professional illustrator so she draws a lot. I, on the other hand need to see the fabric and create that way. We both have different styles but the end result is the same.
WHERE CAN WE FIND YOUR CLOTHING?
Virgin Megastores. However, they carry a different line--more screen prints and portrait tees. Untitled boutique (east village), True Life collective (Brooklyn) Studio Zone (Tokyo) there are many others but couldn’t get clearance to name drop, of course online www.coskeluniversity.com which is probably a better way to get any design you want because at stores of course it’s first come first serve.
WHAT TYPE OF PERSON WEARS COSKEL UNIVERSITY?
Well, different people buy different things so that’s hard, but for our collage pieces; the customers tend to be really fashionable ppl with an eye for details and quality. Socially aware, mature and with disposable income.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SINCE LAUNCHING YOUR LINE?
This may sound strange because there have been many great accomplishments, however for us it was seeing a Japanese woman in yokahama Japan rocking a “Sparrow is God” Tee, especially since I knew she had no idea who the mighty sparrow was except for what she read after purchasing the piece. It was like spreading the culture in a very fashionable way.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE JAPANESE MARKET AND AMERICAN MARKET?
PRICE! In Japan people are willing to spend a lot more on fashionable, well made clothing and they are fanatics when it comes to details. The Japanese market wants exactly what they see on a mag or on the website--no deviations. The American market seems to be more price conscious and less obsessive about details, but more focused on fit and function.
WHAT ARE YOUR PRICE POINTS?
American price points 30.00-60.00 per piece Japan 40.00-80.00
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?
Spread the culture by way of food (opening the Coskel University Café in Tokyo this year), introducing more accessories into the line [and] development of the kid’s line; (Coskel university kindergarten) [and] more additions to the current line by way of, track Jackets, button down shirts and next year jeans. Sounds like a lot but we have an incredible support team.
